The P.212.03 was a design study that became Blohm und Voss' entry into the 1944 Emergency Jet Fighter competition, the purpose of which was to design a single-engine jet fighter that would be cheap and quick to build by non-traditional (i.e., non-aviation) manufacturers. Produced by the design team led by Dr. Richard Vogt, the P.212 called for a short, stubby fuselage, built around the load-bearing engine intake duct and motor mount (a single integrated unit), with the rear fuselage being constructed of wood, using cabinet-joinery techniques. The swept wings had down-turned tips for stability and tip-mounted rudders. A variety of armament fits were planned, with three Mk108 cannon being typical; the aircraft was to be stressed to carry bombs as a "jabo" (fighter-bomber), and it was also planned to fit the X-4 anti-air missile. In the end, though the competition selected the Focke-Wulf TA-183 Huckbein (also available) for series production, the P.212 was selected for prototype evaluation and three prototypes ordered. However, the war ended for Germany before the first prototype was ever completed.
Der Kampflieger offers the paper modeler the opportunity to explore what might have been, if the P.212 had made it into squadron service. With a choice of three scales and three finishes in the package, the builder has a wide latitude to make a unique model. Layers on the PDF offer the following options: sand-and-green camoflauge, green/gray camo, and three-tone-green camo. Other options include aircraft number, the badge of JG-54 as a unit marking, and swastikas in white, black, or off. The last option is instructions on or off (save ink)!
Paper Model Details: 31 parts on two pages (1 page for 1/100 scale) with three construction diagrams. Boxed wheels, printed wheel wells, fuselage formers, and one-piece wing spar. Opaque canopy.
